Freeware SVG Drawing Tool

at the belgium developers conference it was asked if there were any freeware tools available to create SVG graphics.

i'm doing some R&D on Drupal at the moment and stumbled across an article which suggests using inkscape for a freeware vector editor. I've not used it myself so can't comment on how it compares to pay-for apps but it quotes...

"An Open Source vector graphics editor, with capabilities similar to Illustrator, CorelDraw, or Xara X, using the W3C standard Scalable Vector Graphics (SVG) file format."
